Do I need a DBS check?
There are a number of different types of checks that can be performed by the Disclosure and Barring Service ranging from a Basic Check to a Standard and an Enhanced check. The type of check you can be asked by an employer or by a service you are volunteering for is strictly restricted and regulated in law by the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012.
Use the .gov DBS check tool
The best way to see what DBS check you are entitled to ask an employee or volunteer to undertake is by using the governments DBS tool: “Find out which DBS check is right for your employee?” which you can access here: https://www.gov.uk/find-out-dbs-check
Keeping your DBS Certificate up-to-date
Government advice recommends refreshing your DBS Certificate every three years, however, they also offer the DBS Update Service, which you can register for within 30 days of receiving your clear certificate, costs £13 per annum and allows employers to check your certificate.
