Buddy Network Scheme - North Yorkshire Youth - RCVDA

Buddy Network Scheme – North Yorkshire Youth

Context of Role

North Yorkshire Youth is the modern face of a youth association dating back to 1941, and today their mission remains that of their founders – to provide learning and personal development opportunities for children and young people.

North Yorkshire Youth is running a young persons’ befriending project across North
Yorkshire.

The aim of the project is to support 14-19 year olds by helping them to gain confidence, meet their goals and reach independence.

Currently, referrals are being taken from youth support services across North Yorkshire who
support young people to help them to work through issues that might prevent them from
progressing positively in life.

The Buddy project will follow on from this existing work and is designed to give young people continued support at a lower level.

Role Description

North Yorkshire Youth is seeking volunteers for their Buddy Network Scheme who will develop a friendly relationship with a young person once that young person has moved on from youth support services.

A Buddy will meet with a young person for around 1 hour a week, or whatever contact is needed.

Together, the buddy and young person (along with a referring worker in some instances) will develop a befriending agreement and identify progression routes and goals.

The buddy and young person will meet regularly for a period of approximately 6 months.

Meetings will follow a simple framework to allow progression and reflection.

Purpose of the Role

Buddies will meet young people for around 1 hour a week but this will be tailor to each match depending on the need and availability.

The matches are approximately for 6 months but again this is a guide and flexibility will be required depending on the need of each individual match.

Matches are expected to meet in mutually agreed places in the community this could be a walk, library or coffee shop for instance.

All Buddies will receive induction training, and a DBS check.

Benefits

Subsequent to induction training and a DBS check there will be opportunities for Buddies to participate in other further training as appropriate.

Each Buddy will be supported primarily by an NYY Youth & Community Development Worker, though other practitioners may also be available if there are specific concerns about the young person.

Buddies will have a clear set of procedures and processes to support their activity, including lone working safeguards and reporting forms.

Expenses for travel and refreshments will be paid to the Buddy as appropriate.
