Home energy efficiency and smart meter information sessions
Get energy smart!
Middlesbrough Environment City is currently running home energy efficiency and smart meter information sessions specially aimed at older people – especially those with no internet access. If you run an events group or session for older people and would like one of our advisors to attend to run a short, fun and informative session please do get in touch on 01642 579820
Smart meters are the new generation of gas and electricity meters which will replace the traditional meters in our homes. Installed by your energy supplier, they are the simple way to keep control of your energy use.
Smart meters come with an in-home display which shows how much gas and electricity you’re using as you use it, and what it is costing in pounds and pence. They take regular readings and share these automatically with your energy supplier, meaning you can get accurate bills instead of estimates.
Between now and 2020, every household in England, Scotland and Wales will be offered a smart meter at no extra cost.
Contact your energy supplier to find out more or look at information on our webpage –

Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council and Redcar & Cleveland Voluntary Development Agency
Sport Development Apprenticeship
Working with two agencies, an opportunity to support local communities in taking more responsibility for their health and wellbeing, their environment and community led activities.
Through the apprenticeship, there are opportunities to develop leadership and coaching skills, but also, in a fun, inclusive and engaging way consult with local communities as to what will help them take part in physical activities. Physical activity could be as simple as using the stairs instead of lifts, walk to the shops, take part in activities designed by the community itself.
Through the scheme, apprentices will help all ages change their behaviour and adopt and maintain a physically active lifestyle. The apprentice will primarily work with inactive groups of people and help to provide a positive environment which supports people to grow and develop.
In addition, there will be opportunities to work with existing sports clubs, supporting teams and developing coaching skills – for both the apprentice and club members, and creating a legacy for coaching and volunteering within the club itself.
As part of the Community Activator Coach training, apprentices will learn how to work with communities, not only as an activity and sport leader, but understand communities and customers. The Community Activator Coach will be a positive role model who builds good rapport within communities.
Specific activities and initiatives with Redcar and Cleveland will include working with schools and young people, on promoting the benefits of cycling, developing cycling skills and encouraging children and young people to take part in a range of cycling events to be held in the area leading up to the Tour de Yorkshire in 2020. Other cycling events will include The Klondike Race, with new races for children and young people, and a Beach Cycle Race along Redcar sands.
Support will also be given to the Redcar Triathlon in July 2019, and the Redcar Running Festival in September 2019.
The apprentice would also be involved in developing Health Champions and Youth Volunteers across the Borough. In addition to coaching in one or more sports clubs the volunteers would take part in projects which encourage uptake of a range of levels of physical activity.
As part of developing administrative skills, the apprentice will help develop a database of sports clubs across the Borough.
This is a new and exciting development for anyone with an interest in working in the sports field, Community Development, Outreach, Youth Work, Housing Associations or Outdoor Education Centres.
The apprentice will be supported on a daily basis by members of Redcar & Cleveland Voluntary Development Agency, Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council and local sports clubs and communities. The apprentice will be eligible to join the Wheels to Work scheme to help with transport issues.
