CHRISTMAS 2018

“No-one should be alone at Christmas unless they want to be”

Summer holidays are over! The kids are back at school and our thoughts turn to Christmas …
Christmas is a particularly painful time for people who experience loneliness throughout the year and the season only serves to emphasise their loneliness. This applies to people of all ages – loneliness is not an epidemic exclusive to the elderly!

The local authority and voluntary sector are keen to identify loneliness/isolation in the Redcar & Cleveland area and what better time to address the problem than Christmas?
If we start talking to each other now, perhaps we could begin to plan activities and services for Christmas 2018. Could we find ways to pool resources and staff with other organisations in Redcar & Cleveland? Speak to the people you support – do they have have company on Christmas Day, but not the rest of the Christmas period? eg would they like to meet up for a ‘cuppa and a chat’ or perhaps a guided walk?

Are you concerned about someone you know who is not part of a support system and would need persuading to join in … (perhaps they suffer social anxiety) – a volunteer buddy/driver could accompany them to attend a coffee morning or join a craft group for example and encourage them to continue to join in any future activities!

Are you already planning an event? Let RCVDA know and we can circulate a ‘What’s on at Christmas guide’. This could involve early recruitment of volunteers who might not have considered doing something during the season – or simply be ready to respond to offers of help from volunteers that can arise out of a general sense of goodwill or in fact loneliness!

Volunteers needed for Redcar running festival

Race day is Sunday 30th September 2018

We are recruiting volunteer marshals for the Redcar Running Festival. There are a variety of different duties for volunteers to get involved, these include:

  • Manning a road closure – ensuring the road closure is observed and being a focal point for the runners.
  • Goody bags – giving out our goody bags and T-shirts at the finish.
  • Helping at water stations – giving out drinks and helping with cleaning post-race.
  • Race Helpers (Game Makers) – Ensuring runners know where they need to be and get to the start on time.

Volunteers are required to attend a race briefing at Redcar Leisure Centre, at 8am on race day and should be finished for the day at approximately 2pm.
