Young People’s Careers Booklet Workshop

Michael Lyth has been tasked with producing a Careers Booklet raising awareness and promoting jobs within our local authority, in particular highlighting the jobs that aren’t necessarily at the forefront of people’s minds.

Therefore we would like to invite you and young people from your group to our Careers Booklet “That Job!” workshop afternoon. The afternoon will be an opportunity for young people to view what has already been developed and then add their own sparkle to it in order to make sure it is young person friendly. Michael is keen to make sure that the information in there is worded in a way that young people will relate to and is presented in a way that appeals.

Comic Relief New Grant Programme – Tackling Violence Against Women and Girls

Comic Relief have announced recently of a £4 million grant initiative to support organisations that are working to end violence and abuse experienced by women and girls across the UK. The application phase will run from 17 April to midday, 2 July 2018.

The initiative is funded by Comic Relief with the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and governments in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, with government funds raised through the Tampon Tax. The funds will be fully focused on work that supports women and girls at risk of violence who have multiple and complex needs. This includes those who have poor mental health, who use drugs, and/or those who are homeless, as well as less well-served communities or groups, such as BAMER, migrant and LBTI communities, and/or women who are older and/or disabled, among other groups.

Applications are invited for grants of £60,000 – £120,000 across 1 to 3 years and are also open to current grantees. The fund aims to:

• Enable organisations to better support women within the target group.
• Showcase how women’s lived experience can inform the design and delivery of services, practice and policy.
• Provide opportunities for projects to try out new ways and models of working, for example by acting earlier, building community assets or using digital approaches.
• Enable cross sector partnerships to work together to provide high quality support.
• Support approaches that can provide learning for other organisations and stakeholders across the sector.
• Improve access to support for women with complex needs in less well-served communities, such as BAMER, older women, LBTI, disabled women.

NE Community Led Housing Conference

The North East Community-led Housing Conference takes place on Wednesday 20 June at the Sjovoll Centre in Pity Me, Durham. Running from 10.30am until 4.30pm, the morning session will see the launch of the consultation draft of the new North East Community-led Housing Development Strategy. The afternoon session will include lots of detail on community-led housing, some great existing examples from across the region and the chance for detailed discussion in a workshop format.

Nancy Doyle-Hall, Chief Executive of Virgin Money Foundation will be giving a keynote speech on ‘The rise of community-led housing in the North East.’ A copy of the programme for the conference is available via this link.

Volunteering Opportunity – Independent Custody Visitors

Do you have what it takes to check prisoner welfare, custody conditions and police behaviour?

Barry Coppinger, Police and Crime Commissioner for Cleveland, has responsibility for a team of Independent Custody Visitors, a team of volunteers who make unannounced visits to police stations at Middlehaven and Hartlepool.

You will speak with people detained in custody, check their welfare and the conditions in which they are being held and submit reports on their visits. You will work in pairs and will carry out a minimum of six visits per year.

Key criteria

• must be over 18.
• must not be justices of the peace, serving police officers or civilian employees, appropriate adults; members or staff from police and crime commissioners or special constables.
• may have their applications appraised if there appears to be a conflict of interest for people working in other areas of the criminal justice system, such as solicitors and members of the probation service.
• always work as volunteers and only receive out of pocket expenses incurred while carrying out their roles.
• must have a good understanding of the English language – or Welsh, where appropriate – as all ICVA guidelines, reporting and recording procedures are available in either English or Welsh.

Having a criminal record or unspent convictions is not an automatic barrier to becoming a custody visitor. Individual circumstances will be assessed against the needs of the post and suitability of the applicant. All appropriate applications from members of the public are considered on their own merits.

Suitable applicants are invited to attend an interview based on the submission of an application form to the Police and Crime Commissioner.
