Heritage Lottery Funding available for Community Projects to explore the First World War

Jodi Larder from the Heritage Lottery Fund writes:

“Funding is still available from the Heritage Lottery Fund for projects to explore the heritage of the First World War. Don’t miss out!

  • We believe every corner and community in the North East should benefit from this programme.
  • We have funded 90 projects to date and given out over £750,000 in the North East!
  • This is our most straightforward programme to apply to with our highest success rate.
  • You can get grants of £3-10K, and apply at any time up to 2019.
  • You can apply more than once for different projects.

The Centenary is a chance to understand the war better, uncover its stories and explore what it means today.

  • Step 1 Decide which First World War stories your project is going to explore.
  • Step 2 Think about where these stories can be found and researched.
  • Step 3 How will your project involve people?
  • Step 4 – How will you share what you have found with others?

Look at some of the First World War projects already funded by HLF for inspiration
Then either email Jodi: [email protected] with your ideas or send us an outline of what you would like to do and we will get back to you with advice on your best route forward.”

The Good Citizen Award Scam

Action Fraud has been receiving reports of an advanced fee fraud whereby suspects phone a member of the public and claim to be calling on behalf of the UK (or British) Government Grant Department.

They go on to state that the individual has won a Good Citizen Award – of typically £8,000 – and that the grant can be released for a fee (of around £210).
Fortunately, very few members of the public have lost any money as a result of this scam but have reported to Action Fraud in order to help build a picture of this fraud and protect others from falling victim to it.

Protect yourself:

  • There is no genuine ‘Good Citizen Award’ scheme in the UK that operates by cold calling “winners” and asking for an upfront fee to release a grant.
  • If you receive a call that claims to represent such a scheme, it is a scam. End the phone call – do not give out any personal or financial data.

If you, or anyone you know, have been affected by this fraud or any other scam, report it to Action Fraud by calling 0300 123 2040 or visiting www.actionfraud.police.uk.

Promotion / Group Feedback – NE Ambulance Service Inspection

Colin Potter, Senior Regional Public Engagement & Involvement Officer – North Region writes:

“Dear North East Voluntary Sector Organisations

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is the independent regulator of health and adult social care in England. We inspect places like hospitals, care homes and GP surgeries to make sure they meet standards of quality and safety. We then publish a report for each one, including giving them a rating.

As you may know the North East Ambulance Service NHS FT Inspection takes place from 18th April 2016. We hope that your Organisation will be able to help us to promote the Inspection to your networks with our resources. We are keen to promote our online website form and other ways people can give their views. Groups can also send in their members feedback to us.

  1. Promotion of the NEAS NHS FT Inspection

Patients who have used the North East Ambulance Service NHS FT services in the last 12 months (and their families) are encouraged to give feedback. The main services which we are looking for feedback about are…

  • The emergency ambulances;
  • patient transport;
  • NHS 111 Service.

We would be grateful if you could promote this by displaying our poster (attached), forwarding it to your networks and digitally publicising it too if possible on web-sites and in e-bulletins (Jpeg poster also attached) and promoting the website below.

Targeting people who use ambulances in emergencies is difficult but data shows that there are some groups of users who are more easily identified. Data from the London Ambulance Service show that falls (c.10%)*, respiratory (c.9%)* and cardiac (c.8%)* issues are the most common predictable emergency calls. For patient transport key conditions are diabetes, COPD, Cancer, Heart and renal conditions.

Therefore key population groups we can target for ambulance feedback can be assumed to be…

  • Carers Groups;
  • Older Peoples Groups – reaching older people living at home or in residential care;
  • People with long term conditions and complex needs;
  • Learning Disability Groups;
  • [Pregnant women calling ambulances during labour are another possible audience although this is likely to be quite a small sample]

Therefore we are particularly keen to notify these groups of the NEAS Inspection and encourage their feedback.

Inspection website link

There is an Inspection website link below which gives details about the Inspection. People can leave their experiences online.
www.cqc.org.uk/syeneamb

We will also be promoting this inspection on social media as well as using local radio, TV and press to inform the public.

Many ways to share experiences

We are keen for patients and families to share their experience in the following ways…

  • Visiting CQC website link: www.cqc.org.uk/syeneamb
  • Email: [email protected]
  • Letter: CQC, Citygate, Gallowgate, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 4PA
  • Phone: 03000 61 61 61
  • In person: The Inspection Team will be speaking to patients when on site during the course of the inspection to get their views.
  1. Groups can give feedback about NEAS NHS FT

Your group or any group in your network can give feedback to us about the Ambulance Trust. For example, a Carers Group may have a large number of members who use Ambulance Trust services. If they can send in a summary of their members feedback by email which would really help to increase the range of views that we get about the service. This should be anonymous (we don’t need people’s names) but as much detail about the service used (e.g. patient transport) and rough date that they used the service is really helpful.

Any information which you have would be welcome and should be sent to [email protected] (not to my email address). Please can you email this information to us by 31st March 2016. “
